Engineering our Engines

Image
We live in a world of Engineers. After the industrial revolution and with the escalating discoveries in advanced physics, innovation has reached a peak that demands a speedy engineering of all the innovation that is still waiting in research centres for engineers to make them practically feasible. Necessity is the mother of all inventions and while we wait eagerly for inspiration, the human mind evolves and advances gradually, but surely. The word Engineering is derived from the Latin words meaning to ‘generate’ (ideas, products) through ‘cleverness’. It is truly cleverness along with presence of mind that helped Isaac Newton discover the presence of this force of gravity that keeps us all grounded. It is Newton’s acute presence of mind and his dire desire to make calculations relatively easy through ‘Calculus’ that has helped humanity understand the requirement of propulsion to overcome gravity and thus we “fly”. Like him the list of people that have contributed to the human technol...

Innovation and Progress, at what Cost?

Since the 1870s after Max Plank deduced his energy constant, the world of physics opened up like a blooming flower. Planck's constant, is the quantum of electromagnetic action that relates a photon's energy to its frequency. The Planck's constant multiplied by a photon's frequency is equal to a photon's energy. Humanity accomplished greatly in the field of Physics when the Higgs Boson was discovered in 2012 at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. But with all this technological development, is the intrinsic quality of life improving or just are we just striving for a lifestyle of extravagant luxury? Since Copernicus and the Galileo, history has detailed the achievements of so many scientific minds, striving and unveiling a variety of modulations to discover the manipulative possibilities of energy. Doing so, humanity has gone from Graham Bell to Nikola Tesla, overcoming all hurdles to communicate at ease. Today, we can Video Conference with a number of peo...

This year Covid-19 has paralyzed life. It has paralyzed our capability of getting together to work and paralyzed our capability of getting together to celebrate. Over a century, through hard work and inspired innovation, humanity has put brilliant minds together to bridge the distances between people, to bring people closer to work, leisure, to connect and increase our love. In these present days social distancing has become a daily norm, protocols for working from home (WFH) have been accepted as a Standard Official Procedure (SOP) and technology has facilitated this through internet apps. Our regular routine of binging on street food has ended abruptly and people are turning to the internet to remind themselves of the flavours they miss. Smart-phones and the internet have initiated online tutoring and even brought the school teacher home. People's need to visit religious places has been replaced with rituals being telecast on 'Youtube' and Social Media. Impositions of loc...

The Human Mind – Success is a derivative of spiritual satisfaction

The Human Mind. It is more advanced than any computer ever developed and not even artificial intelligence or organic computing comes any closer. As technology develops, scientists are enthusiastic about developing android systems that could replace the human on shop floors of industries and even in the farms. Today we have large robotic machines that can, plough, sow, fertilise, irrigate and even harvest farmlands. A couple of people to operate the machine and plan its work for the day is enough to easily farm over one hectare of land.   A middle-aged man walks into his home after a tiresome rainy day at work. He notices that his daughter is curled up in the corner as she reads a book. He wonders what she reads about until he recognizes it’s her history text book. He is pleased to see her interested in studies, but his pleasure soon turns into worry. He drops his bag of tools by the door he has already shut. He takes the towel within his reach to wipe himself dry. He wonders about his wife for a moment, but rest alludes him as he perceives a draft blowing the curtains. He coughs into his fist as he walks into his bedroom. He scavenges through the linen and sighs as he grabs a blanket with both hands. In a bid to unfold it, he swings it around as he turns to leave the room. By the time he reaches his daughter she is about to turn the page. He heaves and swings the blanket around her shoulders and lets it cover her cold body. Her eyes immediately meet his and she smiles at his benevolence. She drops the book at her ...
